Spring is finally here, and even though we lost an hour of sleep I’m so glad to finally see the daylight sticking around until after 7pm. I’ve been looking forward to April for a long time, because on the 9th I’m jetting off to Cuba for 2 weeks! Cuba has been on my bucket list for a few years now, and I can’t wait to put my out of office on, grab my backpack and enjoy a couple of weeks exploring with one of my best friends.

Of course this means I’m not going to be in Leeds a lot, but luckily for me a lot of the best upcoming stuff isn’t happening until the end of the month. Take a look at my event picks for April.

Everyone’s talking about resolutions, diet adverts are everywhere, and my Twitter timeline is full of #Goals posts- it can only be the start of a brand new year. For all the ‘new year, new start’ bravado, January always feels like a quiet month to me; as usual I’m recovering from a fun but busy Christmas period and trying to get back into the swing of the normal working week. I do celebrate my birthday halfway though the month – I firmly believe that January is the worst month of the year for a birthday, but it does stop me from really experiencing the January Blues that everyone else seems to feel.

So, what’s going on in Leeds? Not that much this month – like me, Leeds always feels to me like it’s recharging in January, taking a deep breath after all the Christmas craziness and gathering its thoughts for the coming year. But of course we’re never without things to do, and if nothing else there are some killer January dining offers going around at some of the city’s best restaurants. Leeds Diary Dates: December 2016

So, November feels like the month where a whole year’s worth of significant stuff has happened. I confirmed an extension on my flat tenancy (ensuring I won’t be homeless on Christmas Day, yay), got promoted, and my company won Best Travel Blog at a major travel awards, to the shock and delight of my fellow content writers and I. Add to all this the fact that basically every week from now until the end of the year is filled with lovely plans and celebrations, and I’m feeling positively festive as we head into December.

The street lights have been turned on, the Christmas trees are up in City Square and the Trinity Centre, and Christkindlmarkt is open for business, which means Christmas has officially started in Leeds. So it will come as no surprise that the majority of my diary dates for December are dominated by festive cheer. But really, is anyone complaining? Continue reading →

October has been a whirlwind month for me. I’ve been a bit absent from my blog – which I discussed here – but the time away has felt necessary, and after a particularly relaxed weekend last week I finally feel ready to up my game again. My trip to Porto in October marked my last holiday of the year which has given me the drive I needed to plan a few extra activities and trips around the UK, and there are so many exciting events going on in Leeds in the run-up to Christmas that I hardly know what to choose. On Friday night I spent my evening trying out a Leeds first for me – Light Night. Even though the event has been running for several years I’ve always managed to be busy or out of the city, but now I’ve finally been to it I think I might be hooked. It felt like the true start of autumn – by the time I went out at 7pm it was already almost completely dark, and I had a fur-lined jacket and bobble hat on to protect myself against the chilly evening air.

I think half of Leeds had turned out for the same reason I had, but luckily there are so many different things to see that the crowds get spread out between them – people are constantly coming and going so you never feel like you’re crowded out of anything. I looked at the website and planned out a rough route before I set off to make sure I didn’t miss anything I really wanted to see, but we also stumbled upon surprises along the way. So, summer is properly over now, right? This week I’ve actually not been feeling so sad about that – it’s like I’ve turned a corner overnight and now I’m really ready to break out my autumn/winter wardrobe. My cord dresses and woolly jumpers are staring to look so appealing, and I can’t wait until it’s cold enough to get my bobble hats out.

October is also going to be made better by the trip to Porto I have planned at the end of the month – I’m looking forward to spending a long weekend exploring the streets, tasting port and rolling home at 3am with my favourite travel buddy.
